Many Bride and Bridegrooms, certainly in the North of England, have been given a biased presentation of the duties and work carried out by a toastmaster. This observation is made from seeing members of staff at hotels and venues (usually not properly trained for the task), who announce the entrance of the Bride and Groom and formal speeches at the end of the meal, and at times just introduce the father of the bride and then dissappear.
While the dictionary's definition of a toastmaster is "one who announces speeches at an event", there is a world of difference between the care given by hotel staff and being cared for by a professionally trained toastmaster and master of ceremonies.
From well before the day, the toastmaster has liaised with the couple to ensure no detail has been missed which would spoil their day.
Two hours before the wedding, the toastmaster is checking on the Bride, and attendants and helping with any last minute hitches.
Then the Bridegroom is welcomed and button holes fitted, guests directed to the ceremony room, and help given to guests in wheelchairs. All through the wedding, the toastmaster is tending to the Bride and making her feel like Royalty. This care and attention is usually lacking from most hotel wedding coordinators who dissapear to do other work not associated with the wedding.
As well as keeping the Bride relaxed happy, help is given to photographers, taking car of cards and presents, and gathering guests for the line up, announcing guests, and then announcing in the top table guests.
All through the meal, the Toastmaster is constantly checking that all guests are fed and not being left with missing cutlery, etc.
The announcing of the speeches is probably only 5% at most of the total duties carried out during the wedding, and in cases less than that.
Another little asset of booking me is that I always carry my camera so in the event of the photographer not turning up, I can take the photos on your behalf so you are not missing out. The Toastmaster duties would take priority over photographs of speeches etc.
